  It Started Innocently Enough:
  
  Déjà's birth was highly celebrated, despite the fact that the Amorettes had desired a boy, someone to carry the family name and money into the future. But it was hard to be disappointed upon seeing the tiny, black-masked bundle of white fur with that lone heart-shaped marking. Her mother whispered "Je l'aime déjà" and as such, her name was chosen.
  
  It was an envious enough upbringing from an outside perspective; anything she wanted was hers, only the best schools, private tutors, prestigious music instructors. All focused on the development of a proper young woman with desirable talents and entertaining skills all for the sake of reputation. Before long, she could sing the most moving of ballads, play any piece on the ivory and black keys, and dance the most challenging of choreography from ballet to an intimate waltz and everything in between. But there was no freedom to enjoy these things, as they were to be done on command for the amusement of her father's guests, much like a songbird in a gilded cage. Despite her wit and keen intuition, she would be kept in the confines of their home, brought out for show like one's prized trophy.
  
  In truth it took her years to realize what was happening. When one is young, the details often can be overlooked. But as she grew, she noticed her mother often pushing her towards the sons of their neighbors, encouraging her to spend time around them despite there being little interest from them.
